WIRED

Lumbar support materials provide strong spinal alignment support. Light pressure relief for stomach and back sleepers. Extensive sleep trial, warranty, and included white-glove delivery.

TIRED

Foam layers didn’t provide deep contouring for side sleepers. Materials are temperature-regulating but not outright cooling.

If you’re tuning into the 2006 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, you may have caught a Saatva mattress commercial or two. Saatva provided much of the bedding for Team USA, with special winter bundles for Team USA Hockey and US Figure Skating. This is very much by design on Saatva’s part, as the brand announced that it would be the official mattress provider for the LA 2028 Summer Games.

I approached Saatva about these developments and asked which of its 10 mattress models it planned to deliver for the event. Turns out, the dorms at the Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, have already been furnished with Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid mattresses. Athletes will give feedback on their sleeping experience with this mattress, and in turn, Saatva will take that into account while preparing for the next Games.

After learning this, I immediately requested a sample of Saatva’s Memory Foam Hybrid to test out. Now that I have slept on it for two weeks, I can see why it’s what was provided. The firm lumbar support shines for athletes and average sleepers a, but I have concerns about how well the memory foam relieves pressure.

Press Play

Saatva has a few notable features that set its mattresses apart, and these extend to the Memory Foam Hybrid model. This includes natural materials whenever possible, organic cotton covers and plant-based fire barriers; reinforced edge support; and hyper-focused lumbar support. However, the Memory Foam Hybrid can’t be considered a truly organic mattress, given its memory foam contents. It does use a botanical antimicrobial treatment on the cover and is both CertiPur-US-certified memory foam and GreenGuard Gold certified. I did notice light off-gassing when it first arrived, but these two certifications gave me peace of mind that I’m not inhaling potentially harmful fumes.

Aside from Saatva’s signature features, I was keen to evaluate the performance of the memory foam layers within this hybrid. An inch and a half of proprietary AirCradle memory foam lies directly under the organic cotton blend cover and has a wavy look. This foam’s curvature is meant to improve airflow, which is the most common complaint about memory foam: It can sleep hot because it traps body heat. The AirCradle foam is also the first thing your body is supposed to sink into, so contouring is another supposedly defining feature. Under this layer is Saatva’s “crown jewel” of its mattresses: a half-inch layer of foam placed right beneath your lumbar zone to keep it lifted. When you look at the cover of the mattress, you’ll notice that the tufting in this area is very concentrated compared to the rest of the mattress. That is by design, providing not only a firm feel but a visual representation of what’s underneath.

At the center are pocked steel coils, which also help support the lower back. With each coil able to push back independently based on the weight on top of it, this keeps the firmest support around the midsection while remaining softer everywhere else. This is also referred to as zoned support, having firmness variance according to your body weight. Surrounding these coils are high-density foam rails that keep you fully supported to the edge of the mattress, whether you’re sitting or lying down. Every mattress I’ve ever encountered from Saatva, whether it’s the Saatva Classic, Saatva HD for heavier bodies, or Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid, meets this standard and sets the bar for other mattresses I test. If you have mobility issues, sleep on the edge because your child or pet hogs the bed, or need extra support there, Saatva would be a great choice.

Practice Run

As a veteran mattress tester, I understand why Saatva opted for the Memory Foam Hybrid over its popular Saatva Classic dual-innerspring hybrid mattress or the specialized pressure relief of the Rx. From a constructive standpoint, it strikes a balance between two key mattress types, resulting in a medium-firm feel—which, technically, should work for most body types and sleeping positions. The average track athlete has a different build from a swimmer, and you have to establish a “baseline” mattress before fully committing to the final edition for the LA28 Games.

That’s a very tall order to expect a mattress to work for everyone. I went into testing cautiously optimistic that this mattress would work for me, no matter what. Technically, it did. However, if you strictly prefer side sleeping or weigh less than 150 pounds, it won’t do much to relieve pressure points. There was no denying that this mattress was built to combat back pain, as I felt even weight distribution no matter what position I slept in. This is good because you don’t want one part of the body, such as the hips, sinking in more than your shoulders. That pushes your spine out of alignment, and lying for hours on end in that position is a fast way to develop back pain. The quilted portion of the cover, lumbar memory foam layer, and pocketed coils were right on the money for back support.

Based on the advertised deep contouring and pressure-relieving AirCradle foam, I expected the pressure relief to be a standout feature, but it wasn’t. This is not to say that pressure relief was absent in testing, but it was minimal compared to that of firmer hybrid mattresses I’ve tested such as the DreamCloud Hybrid or the Wolf Memory Foam Hybrid Premium Firm. Which brings me to firmness: By my measure, this was not a “medium” mattress. Saatva rates this mattress between 5 and 7 on the firmness scale, so it falls in the medium-firm range. Unless you’re more than 200 pounds or have a taller build, your body mass would lead to more sinkage. This felt a true firm mattress, which I’d rate at 7.5 to 8 out of 10. For context, the firmer hybrid mattresses we’ve tested, the Plank Firm Luxe and Bear Elite Hybrid, reside in the 8 to 10 range of the firmness scale.

To be clear, a firm mattress is not at all a bad thing. The light cushioning for my pressure points, especially my hips, was right on target for back and stomach sleepers. Paired with how much spinal alignment support you get from this mattress, this is an excellent choice for these two sleeping positions. Side sleepers, I’m much more hesitant. In my two-week testing period, I also tried this mattress with Saatva’s Graphite Memory Foam Topper, which was included in the Winter Bundle. That helped significantly to create more cushion to sink into. The downside is that it’s not included with the mattress and costs extra. Athletes will have this available to them in Colorado Springs, but I can’t help but wonder whether, for LA28, it might have been more strategic to go with the Saatva Classic mattress, with its three customizable firmness levels and two heights. However, I can’t even begin to contemplate the logistical headache that would be; I am just a humble mattress tester.

The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid did well at maintaining a bouncy feel that supported me as I moved between sleeping positions. It also maintained good motion isolation, keeping the bed stable so my husband wasn’t disturbed on his side as I tossed and turned. I wouldn’t label this a cooling mattress, even with the graphite-infused topper. It stayed more temperature-neutral, not amassing excessive body heat, but it didn’t offer a cool-to-the-touch feel either.

Personal Record

Overall, this is a high-quality offering from Saatva, and based on my testing history with the brand, I expected nothing less. It also comes with Saatva’s free white-glove delivery service, which includes delivery, mattress setup, and haul-away of your old mattress. As someone who hauls around beds every single week, this being part of your purchase is a very big deal. Throw in a 365-night sleep trial with no minimal “break-in” period, plus a lifetime warranty that Saatva offers, and you’ll probably start to understand why I’ve always regarded this brand as one of the best in the game—they know what they are doing.

To return to Saatva’s ongoing Olympics preparation, this hybrid can technically support different sleeper types, especially when a mattress topper is used. I maintain that I found it best for stomach or back sleepers, or for combination sleepers who frequently sleep on both sides. However, I’m curious how the mattress can be modified to better accommodate hot sleepers and different firmness preferences, and how that will ultimately affect the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid mattress’s feel. For now, if you need a new mattress that prioritizes temperature regulation, responsiveness, lumbar support, durability, and a very generous trial period, the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid mattress is a serious contender.
