The case for Bloom Energy

Bloom Energy serves as a prominent player among renewable energy stocks, focusing on solid oxide technology for onsite electricity and hydrogen production. The company targets large-load customers in the data center, semiconductor, and industrial sectors where power reliability is critical. Key partnerships include an agreement with American Electric Power (AEP -0.68%) to provide up to one gigawatt of fuel cells and a financing framework worth nearly $5.0 billion with Brookfield (BN -0.58%).

In FY 2025, Bloom Energy reported revenue of approximately $2.0 billion, which represents a growth rate of roughly 37.3% compared to the prior year. Despite this robust top-line performance, the company reported a net loss of nearly $88.4 million for the same period. This loss widened from a net loss of approximately $29.2 million in FY 2024, although the net margin of negative 4.4% in FY 2025 was a significant improvement over the negative 22.7% margin seen in FY 2023.

As of its December 2025 balance sheet, Bloom Energy holds a debt-to-equity ratio of 3.9x. This ratio measures total debt against holder equity, indicating the company relies moderately on borrowed funds to fuel its expansion. The current ratio, which measures a company’s ability to cover short-term debts with its short-term assets, stands at a strong 6.0x. For FY 2025, free cash flow reached close to $57.2 million, which is the cash remaining after paying for operating costs and equipment investments.

The case for Diamondback Energy

Diamondback Energy is an independent producer focused on unconventional onshore reserves in the Permian Basin of West Texas. The company concentrates its activities on the Wolfcamp and Spraberry formations, utilizing horizontal drilling to maximize extraction efficiency. Diamondback relies on a small group of significant customers for a majority of its revenue, and customer concentration this adds a layer of risk to the business. Its subsidiary, Viper Energy (VNOM +1.97%), provides additional revenue through mineral interests in the same region.

In FY 2025, Diamondback Energy generated revenue of roughly $14.3 billion, representing a year-over-year growth of approximately 36.3%. The company achieved a net income of nearly $1.7 billion, resulting in a net margin of close to 11.1%. While revenue grew significantly compared to FY 2024, net income actually decreased from the roughly $3.3 billion reported in the previous fiscal year. This trend reflects the inherent volatility in global energy prices that impacts even the most efficient producers.

As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the company maintains a conservative debt-to-equity ratio of 0.4x. This indicates a lower reliance on debt relative to its equity when compared to many peers in the energy sector. However, the current ratio is roughly 0.4x, suggesting the company maintains a tight level of short-term liquidity relative to its immediate liabilities. Free cash flow for FY 2025 was robust at approximately $5.5 billion, providing ample capital for dividends and future drilling projects.

Risk profile comparison

Bloom Energy faces significant risks as the markets for distributed energy and hydrogen are still emerging and may not achieve expected demand. The company is currently navigating multiple securities class action lawsuits filed in 2026 regarding its supply chain practices and the sourcing of materials scandium. Operations are also heavily dependent on government incentive programs and tax financing. Any regulatory changes or the expiration of these benefits could significantly harm revenue and project execution in a highly competitive market.

Diamondback Energy is highly exposed to the volatility of oil and natural gas prices, which directly dictate its profitability and the valuation of its reserves. Because its operations are geographically concentrated in the Permian Basin, the company is vulnerable to regional infrastructure bottlenecks and water disposal restrictions. Furthermore, Diamondback carries substantial indebtedness related to its acquisition strategy. The business also faces increasing pressure from climate change regulations and scrutiny over environmental, social, and governance factors that could limit future capital availability.

Valuation comparison

Diamondback Energy appears significantly cheaper based on future earnings estimates, while Bloom Energy carries a much higher valuation reflecting its position as a high-growth technology play.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

I’d go with Diamondback Energy. Its combination of exceptional free cash flow, a rapidly growing dividend, and an emerging AI energy partnership makes it one of the most well-rounded energy investments available right now. To its credit, Bloom Energy just crossed $1 billion in quarterly revenue for the first time, with product revenue more than tripling year over year as AI data centers adopted its fuel cell systems. For investors comfortable with a higher-growth, higher-risk profile, the momentum there is worth watching.

But Diamondback is running a tighter, more profitable operation than almost any company in the energy sector. Free cash flow came in at nearly 50% of revenue last quarter. Earnings more than doubled year over year, and the company reduced net debt while raising its buyback authorization and paying a dividend. A pending partnership with a hyperscaler to supply power directly from its natural gas production adds an AI angle most investors have not yet priced in.

It’s clear that Bloom Energy is growing fast, but Diamondback is growing profitably and finding new ways to stay relevant in a rapidly changing energy landscape. For investors building long-term wealth, that combination is the better buy right now.
